Your BRP Has Expired — Set Up Your eVisa Before the Deadline
31 Dec 2025
If you still have a Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) in your wallet, it has already expired. All BRPs expired on 31 December 2024, and the Home Office has replaced them with digital eVisas.
What You Need To Do
You must create a UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration) account and set up your eVisa. This is free and does not affect your immigration rights.
Deadline: If your BRP expired on 31 December 2024, you have until 30 June 2026 to set up your eVisa (18 months from expiry).
Why This Matters
- Travel: Without an eVisa linked to your passport, you may be denied boarding on flights to the UK — even if you have valid immigration permission
- Employment: You can still use an expired BRP to generate share codes for Right to Work checks for up to 18 months after expiry, but this is a temporary measure
- Future applications: Your eVisa will be needed for ILR and citizenship applications
How To Set It Up
1. Go to gov.uk/evisa
2. Create a UKVI account (or log in if you already have one)
3. Link your current passport to your account
4. Verify your identity
Important Reminders
- Keep your expired BRP card — it may be useful for future applications
- Make sure your eVisa is linked to the passport you travel with
- If you get a new passport, update your UKVI account immediately
- As of April 2025, an estimated 300,000 UK residents had not yet set up their eVisa
