BNO Visa Route Expanded — Adult Children of BNO Holders Can Now Apply Independently
09 Feb 2026
The Home Office has announced a significant expansion of the Hong Kong BNO visa route, closing a loophole that has separated thousands of families since the scheme launched in 2021.
What Changed
Previously: Adult children of BNO status holders could only accompany their parents if they remained financially dependent on them. Those who had already formed their own households were excluded.
Now: Adult children of BNO status holders who were under 18 at the time of Hong Kong's handover on 1 July 1997 can apply independently — even if they are no longer financially dependent on their parents. They can also bring their own partners and children.
Who Benefits
This change benefits Hong Kong residents who:
- Have a parent who holds BN(O) status
- Were born on or after 2 July 1979 (making them under 18 at the 1997 handover)
- Did not register as BN(O) status holders in their own right
- Were previously unable to join their parents in the UK because they had established independent households
Requirements Unchanged
The existing eligibility and suitability requirements remain the same:
- Applicants must be ordinarily resident in Hong Kong, the UK, Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man
- The 5-year pathway to settlement is confirmed to continue
- Absence limits (180 days in any 12-month period) still apply
Settlement Pathway Confirmed
The government has confirmed that the BNO route will continue to provide a 5-year pathway to settlement, even as other work visa routes face potential extension to 10 years under the earned settlement proposals.
